Archery GB handicaps range from 0 to 100. The lower the number the better.
Each archer, under the Archery GB system, will have an official Archery GB handicap rating for each of the bow disciplines that he/she shoots (recurve, compound, barebow, longbow). The lower the handicap rating the better the archer.
Having a handicap rating means that you can then take part in handicap shoots.
Note. In order for the system to work fairly every archer is required to submit details for every complete, recognised round shot to their club records officer.
An archer gets an official Archery GB handicap rating after shooting three complete, recognised rounds in a particular bow discipline. Each of the rounds shot will be given a handicap rating based on the score. The official Archery GB archer handicap rating will be the average of those three handicap ratings rounded up to the next whole number.
e.g. Archer shoots 60, 58 and 55. Their official Archery GB handicap rating will be (60 + 58 + 55) / 3 = 57.67 => 58
Once you have been given an initial handicap rating by your records officer you may be able to improve that rating until the end of the year.
In order to improve your rating you need to shoot a complete, recognised round. At the end of the round you look up the handicap rating for your score.
If the handicap rating for your score is equal to or higher (worse) than your official rating then your rating stays the same.
If the handicap rating for your score is less (better) than your official rating then your rating is changed as follows:
Take the avearge of your official rating and the rating for the round just shot. Round up to the nearest whole number.
e.g. 1. Official handicap rating is 60. Handicap rating for round just shot is 58. Your new official Archery GB handicap rating is (60 + 58) / 2 => 59.
e.g. 2. Official handicap rating is 60. Handicap rating for round just shot is 55. Your new official Archery GB handicap rating is (60 + 55) / 2 = 57.5 => 58.
e.g. 3. Official handicap rating is 60. Handicap rating for round just shot is 59. Your new official Archery GB handicap rating is (60 + 59) / 2 = 59.5 => 60. As you can see, in order to improve during the year you need to shoot a rating two less than your current rating.
At the end of the year your handicap is reassessed to be the average of your best three rounds in the year. If less than three rounds have been shot then please refer to the official green book.
